How to Choose the Right Sofa for You?

Design Space

Sofa, lounges, or couch however you name it, have become a staple amongst furniture pieces while moving into a new house or renovating the existing one.

From binge-watching movies to gossiping with our friends, sofas are a perfect daily use item to just kick back and relax.. However, as fascinating and exciting as all of this sounds, you have to be careful and put some effort while looking to ensure you’re making the right choice!

Below are certain factors that can help you make an ideal choice while buying a sofa for your home:

  1. Size:

It might be tempting to just go ahead and buy a large sectional sleeper sofa to maximize your comfort. But I guarantee that you’ll regret it if you’re in a studio apartment where you and your guests will be bumping into your grand sofa any time you want to leave the room.

So first things first, get the measurements of your room. You don’t want your sofa to cover the entire wall, so make sure you get a sofa with at least 2 feet of space on either side of the wall. If you’re unfamiliar with some of the various sofa types, we’ve got you covered. In ascending order of size, here are some sofas you can consider for your space:

Loveseat Sofa: These are quaint two-seaters which can have a space in any apartment. Generally, loveseats range between 50 and 70 inches, making them the perfect fit for a small apartment!

Sectional Sofa: These are some of the bigger sofas you can purchase; they generally come between 90 and 150 inches, so if you’re considering one, make sure you have the necessary space! The word ‘sectional’ in front is just another way to say that it consists of two or more pieces which, when put together, form one big sofa.

Sleeper Sofa: These are a great option for if you ever plan on having guests. Because this sofa doubles as a bed, it generally requires more space than a traditional sofa. Generally these types of sofas will be around 70 inches wide and 90 inches long. However, sleeper sofas often come in sectional sleeper sofa styles, meaning that they can be even bigger depending on what you’re looking for.

The best way to select the right size is to either draw the measurements out on a piece of paper and cut it out or try an online mood board tool that can help you style and save you some time as well. Now, let’s not ignore rug sizing since its color, texture, and size as well impacts the cohesiveness and appearance of the sofa.

  1. Style:

Style is yet another significant component to be considered while choosing a sofa as it speaks about your personality and the charisma you possess. Location is also an essential supplement here that needs examination while selecting the right style. Whether it’s by the coast that you reside or amidst an industrial area, the vibe is equally mesmerizing but contrasting as well, so the styling has to be done very attentively and precisely.

There are many different styles which you can consider. A small sectional sofa for a nice, contemporary look. A sleeper sofa or sofa bed for guests to sleep on when they stay over. Or a classic recliner sofa for leisurely watching.

Studies have also shown that stylistic tastes change with age. Your tastes will obviously differ from other people around your age, but generally the older you get, the more you will prefer softer and larger sofas that complement your already formed living space aesthetic. Younger people may prefer smaller sofas, both to fit their hectic lifestyles and for the convenience when moving the sofa in and out of their apartment.

  1. Material:

Now there are various types of materials, and each has its own set of pros and cons. Especially for this, your comfort, requirement, and health issues in case any need to be kept in mind before you decide on one. Be it Fabric, Leather, Linen, Velvet, Polyester, or Woolen each sofa material has some unique feature that distinguishes it from the rest.

But, as we discussed earlier, you need to consider the above-mentioned factors while choosing the same, e.g. if you have a pet, so, in such a scenario, you won’t prefer a linen sofa as the fibers are thin and tend to wear out faster. Since you don’t want to ruin your brand new couch with stains or spills, make sure to consider some nice sofa slipcovers as well.
